This Tiny, Isolated New Jersey Village Is One Of The Last Of Its Kind

While Viking Village has been commercialized over the years, it still retains its history and charm. Visit throughout the year at 19th Street and Bayview Avenue in Barnegat Light. Upcoming events include the Antique & Collectible Show on September 17th and Santa’s Viking Christmas Village on November 25th.

At one time, mining towns and fishing villages were abundant in the Garden State. From Bivalve to Batsto, several still remain, in one form or another. Still, one stands out for its unique charm. Located on an island, it’s isolated from the mainland and it’s our very own slice of a simpler time.

Viking Village in Barnegat Light is a historic fishing village that was founded in the 1920s by Scandinavian immigrants. It was originally known as the Independent Fish Company.

It is currently home to over 40 fishing vessels including a scalloper featured in the hit film, “The Perfect Storm.” Each year, about 5 million pounds of seafood is packed here and shipped all around the world.

In addition to being nationally recognized for quality and sustainable fishing, the village is home to charming shops, a maritime museum and several historic structures.
Choose from clothing boutiques, home decor shops, jewelry stores, studios, galleries and several dining options.
Stop at How You Brewin’ for coffee, baked goods and ice cream or Off The Hook for seafood takeout. Frank’s Produce offers fruits and veggies and Cassidy’s Fish Market serves up the catch of the day. Head to Sugar Shack for sweets and more.
Each shop is so unique! June Bug offers fashion, art, jewelry and gifts. The Seawife sells antiques out of a restored 1890s schoolhouse. In fact, many of the buildings have a story beyond their days as shops.
