Brave locals will channel their inner polar bears on Super Bowl Sunday as St. Francis Community Center and the Southern Regional High School swim teams hold the 16th annual Super Plunge – a quick dip in the cold ocean – at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 on the 48th Street beach in Brant Beach. This annual wintertime event has become a “community favorite,” St. Francis communications coordinator Lori Dudek noted.
Pre-registration is required. Registration forms are online at stfranciscenterlbi.org/special-events/super-plunge, or at the front desk of the community center, at 4700 Long Beach Blvd. in Brant Beach. Bring or mail forms to St. Francis Community Center, Attn: Super Plunge XVI, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach Township, NJ 08008-3926.
Late registration is available at the center on Friday, Jan. 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Registration fee is $30 per person on or before Jan. 27 and $35 if registering after that date. Student registration fee is only $15 by Jan. 27 and $20 after Jan. 27. Participants are encouraged to seek sponsor donations in addition to their registration fee. Sponsor forms can also be found online.
Event proceeds benefit the community center and the Rams swimmers.
“Plungers should bring with them their courage, bathing suit, towels, blankets and whatever else is needed to warm up after the ocean dip,” said Dudek. “Costumes of all kinds are also encouraged.”
Post-Plunge festivities will commence back at the community center immediately following the event. Hot chocolate, coffee, tea and goodies will be served, and prizes will be awarded for the youngest plunger, oldest plunger, best costume, most funds raised and more.
