Responders Battle Home Fire in Ship Bottom – Weather Challenges Firefighters

Local fire companies engage a home fire on Shore Avenue in Ship Bottom.

As of 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, several local fire companies have a fire on Shore Avenue in Ship Bottom under control.

Members of the Ship Bottom Fire Co., as well as Beach Haven, Surf City, Barnegat Light and mainland volunteer fire companies, fought the blaze in a two-story raised ranch at 914 Shore Ave. (corner of 10th Street, south of the Causeway Bridge) across from the Ship Bottom Boat ramp.

“They seem to have it under control now and are just doing a mop-up,” said the Ship Bottom Police Department.

Adding to the challenge is a good amount of flooding due to the prolonged periods of onshore wind and storm surge from both the recent coastal storm and today’s nor’easter. There are 40 mph winds with higher gusts and mixed precipitation. Firefighters had to wade through nearly knee-deep water to access the home as the bay is threatening to jump the bulkhead at the adjacent boat ramp park.

There are no reported injuries. According Ship Bottom police, there was no one living in the home, and there has not been an opportunity to assess the possible cause at this time.
