Ready, Set, Go: Taking the Plunge for a Cause

More than 160 people took the plunge into the cold Atlantic Ocean on the 48th Street beach in the Brant Beach section of Long Beach Township Feb. 2, hours after Punxsutawney Phil’s failure to see his own shadow forecasted an early spring. Even if the groundhog had seen his shadow, though, those same individuals would have run into the ocean waters as part of the 16th annual Super Plunge.

The air temperature was 44 degrees at go time, not the coldest temps for the yearly event, and the water temperature registered 40 degrees, a few degrees above normal for this time of year.

Awards were handed out for best costume, Chris Cottone; youngest plunger, Lina Wright; oldest plunger, Carol Bradshaw; and most funds raised overall, Patrick Pietrefesa.

The event is sponsored by the St. Francis Community Center. All proceeds benefit the St. Francis Community Center and Southern Regional High School swim teams.
