As this year’s severe influenza season continues, the Long Beach Island Health Department is offering free flu shots at its office in Ship Bottom. The department recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine each year.
“Flu activity is widespread in most of the United States,” states a department press release. “People who are very sick or who are at high risk of serious flu complications and get flu symptoms should be treated with antiviral drugs as soon as possible. Get vaccinated if you haven’t yet. There are still weeks of flu activity to come.”
In addition to a flu shot, the department recommends the following: avoid close contact with people who are sick, stay home when ill, cover the mouth and nose when sneezing, and regularly and properly wash hands.
“Other good habits, such as getting plenty of sleep, engaging in physical activity, managing stress, drinking water and eating healthy food will help you stay healthy in the winter and all year,” the department points out.
The LBI Health Department is located on the first floor at 2119 Long Beach Blvd. in Ship Bottom.
