Harvey Cedars’ six traffic lights on Long Beach Boulevard are on blinking mode, almost a month earlier than they would normally be flashing.
“Barnegat Light traditionally has had its lights blinking after Labor Day because there is much less traffic, so we thought we could do the same,” said Borough Clerk Daina Dale. “Other areas on the Island will keep the traffic lights on until after Chowderfest, but those towns have a higher volume of traffic than on this end.”
Dale said because the Boulevard is a county road, Harvey Cedars had to make a request to the Ocean County Engineering and Road departments. She said starting the blinking lights in September would be on a trial basis.
“If we find that we need the lights on some streets, like 80th Street or Salem Avenue, we can address that and maybe put the light back on,” she said. “But I doubt we would change that this year. We would wait until the following September.”
