The Long Beach Island branch of the Ocean County Library in Surf City will host a blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Red Cross traditionally holds drives late in the summer and in early fall, as it is a likely time supplies run low, when people are engaged in more outdoor activities, and there is a greater possibility of suffering a serious injury.
According to the chapter, prospective blood donors must be in good health, be at least 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. Prior to the donation, they will be asked questions about their medical history, and also have temperature, pulse and blood pressure checked.
The actual donation takes between eight and 10 minutes. When approximately one pint has been collected, a staff person will place a bandage on the donor’s arm. Following the donation, free refreshments will be available.
To make an appointment, visit redcrossblood.org or phone 800-733-2767. For more information, call the branch at 609-494-2480.
