Barnegat Lighthouse State Park Offers Vintage Camping

Barnegat Light — Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in Barnegat Light is looking for a few good trailers pre-1980 for its third annual Fall Vintage Camping Overnight event, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 28. This special camping experience is open to pre-1992 VW campers, all years of Teardrops and Airstream trailers, and pre-1980 vintage camper trailers. Check-in starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday; check-out time is 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The public is welcome to tour the vintage campers during a free “open house” on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. The “best” vintage camper trailer will be awarded a trophy by the Volkswagen Club of South Jersey.

There are a limited number of “sites” available in the park parking lot, 15 for camper trailers being towed and 30 for self-contained campers. The fee is $25 per site; registration began Aug. 5. Restrooms will be available, but no showers, electric or dump station. Campers will have use of the large shade shelter for a “pot luck” dinner and enjoy a campfire on the beach from 7 to 9 p.m. The Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park will have the lighthouse open for a free night climb from 7 to 9 p.m.; donations are welcomed.

The park and its historic Barnegat Lighthouse are open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Climb the 217 steps to view Barnegat Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding Long Beach Island. There are also fishing, a Visitor Center museum, and a Maritime Forest Trail to walk.
