Long Beach Island — To help usher in the July 4 holiday, the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium announced, at the end of June, the winners of this year’s “Favorite Beaches” poll in a ceremony held in Ocean City. While that shore town remains defending overall champion – with 11 straight wins – Long Beach Island’s own Beach Haven and Barnegat Light did place third and fifth, respectively, in the Ocean County category.
Seaside Heights took the top spot in Ocean County, followed by Point Pleasant Beach, and with Island Beach State Park at fourth.
NJSGC launched the survey in 2008, then called “New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches,” to help encourage stewardship and pride in the state’s beloved shore communities, while promoting friendly competition between beach towns.
In 2016, the organization changed things up a bit, and allowed voters to pick individual victors from all four coastal counties, while still naming an overall winner. This year, thousands of voters participated in the survey following its debut over Memorial Day weekend.
The consortium is an affiliation of colleges, universities and other groups dedicated to advancing knowledge and stewardship of New Jersey’s marine and coastal environment.
